The History of Bachata Dance at Danza Academy of Social Dance

Originating in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s, Bachata is a captivating dance with influences from Son and Bolero, characterized by its syncopated rhythm. However, it would take several decades for Bachata to become the global dance phenomenon it is today.

The Origins of Bachata

Bachata’s roots are deeply intertwined with indigenous Taino culture, African rhythmic patterns, and Spanish influences from Europe. The sensual melodies and soulful beats are a reflection of the Dominican Republic’s rich culture and musical heritage.

In the 1960s-1970s, Bachata music, played with guitars, maracas, and heartfelt lyrics, began in the brothels and bars of the Dominican Republic. However, it faced opposition when dictator Trujillo banned it, favoring Meringue and treating Bachata as a lesser art form.

The Music That Inspired the Dance

Bachata’s music is known for its poignant love stories set to maracas and nylon-string guitars. Key figures in the evolution of Bachata include:

  • Jose Manuel Calderon (1962), who composed the first Bachata song, “Borracho de amor” (Drunk with Love).
  • By the 1980s-1990s, Bachata earned recognition from UNESCO as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”
  • Monchy y Alexandra and Aventura brought in new instrumentation like guira and electric guitars.
  • In 1992, Juan Luis Guerra won a Grammy for his album “Bachata Rosa.”
  • Other influential artists include Anthony Santos and Zacarias Ferreira.

The Evolution of Bachata Dance

While Bachata started to gain popularity in the 1980s-1990s, it continued to evolve by blending with other Latin dance styles, such as Zouk and Tango. The introduction of Sensual Bachata brought with it slow, intimate movements, including dips and intricate body movements. As time passed, Bachata also began incorporating elements of Salsa, Hip-Hop, and Contemporary dance.

The rise of social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok allowed Bachata to spread globally, making it accessible to dancers of all ages and backgrounds.

What Is Bachata Dance?

Bachata’s dance style originally involved forward and backward movements, but modern versions now focus more on side-to-side steps. The dance is based on a pattern of eight beats, with four beats per measure in the music, and the signature hip sway.

In Bachata dance lessons at Danza Academy of Social Dance, beginners will learn the most important element of Bachata—hip action. The dance should feel sensual and romantic, with a strong partner connection.

To dance the Bachata:

  1. Hold your partner’s arms with your own raised.
  2. Step left (1, 2, 3) with a hip movement, then step right (5, 6, 7) with another hip, and repeat.
  3. The hip movement comes from bending and straightening the knee while keeping the heel up.

Different Styles of Bachata

Bachata is a versatile dance with several distinct styles, each with its own unique characteristics:

  • Dominican Bachata: Traditional and closest to its roots, with minimal turns and bouncy footwork.
  • Sensual Bachata: Focuses on intimate partner work, with slower and more sensual movements.
  • Moderna Bachata: A modern fusion that includes influences from Bolero and Tango, emphasizing hip movement and body crosses.
  • Traditional Bachata: Romantic with few turns, often featuring dips and an emphasis on the hip movement on the fourth beat.
  • Bachatango: A fusion of Bachata and Tango, popular in Turin, Italy, known for its distinctive “pop” count and tango kicks.
