When Cheryl Angelelli broke her neck in a swimming accident at the age of 14, she could never have imagined that she would one day dance elegantly across a ballroom floor. But Cheryl defied the odds. Not only does she perform as a wheelchair dancer, but she also leads a movement to create opportunities for individuals in wheelchairs to experience the joy of ballroom dancing.
Cheryl and her professional dance partner, Tamerlan Gadirov, are the No. 1-ranked wheelchair ballroom dance couple in the U.S. Together, they will be hosting a Wheelchair Ballroom Dance Class at Danza Academy of Social Dance. Join us on Saturday, April 6 from 3-4:30 p.m. at our Brookfield studio (15760 W. Capital Dr., Brookfield) for this FREE introduction to wheelchair ballroom dance!
This class is the first of its kind in our region, and we are excited to offer this opportunity to the community. Danza Academy of Social Dance is proud to support individuals in both manual and power wheelchairs, and we welcome you to attend whether you bring your own dance partner or need one provided. You’ll have the chance to learn various dance styles from Cheryl Angelelli and Tamerlan Gadirov, who are ranked the best in the nation!
Cheryl, the co-founder of Dance Mobility, a program created in 2015 at Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, has made it her mission to help people with disabilities experience the freedom and joy of ballroom dancing. The program is supported by a grant from the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan Foundation.
“I know how much joy dancing has brought me, and I want to share it with others who have disabilities,” says Cheryl. “I may not dance with my feet, but I dance with my heart.”
In addition to Cheryl and Tamerlan, Ms. Wheelchair Wisconsin 2019, Autumn Neugent, will also be participating in the class. Autumn, who uses a wheelchair due to multiple sclerosis, is passionate about raising Ability Awareness and showcasing the many abilities that people with disabilities have. “I’m excited to learn how to move and feel elegant in my wheelchair,” says Autumn. “My motto is, ‘Don’t let the wheelchair fool you.’”
We are thrilled to offer this unique opportunity at Danza Academy of Social Dance, and we invite everyone to come and experience the power of dance. Space is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot by calling us at 262-796-1121.
